How to Play Nim

Play Nim ↗

Game guide · GDXIANGSHUN

Play Nim with the rules at hand

Open Nim, check the instructions and begin a round. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Build familiarity through play

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Keep the objective visible.

What the game asks you to do

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

The order of play

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Keyboard and screen controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Use the control method described here for this activity. Look at the feedback after the action.

See how the rules apply

If only one counter remains in one heap, taking it wins under the normal-play rule used here. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Check the stated objective.

A common point of confusion

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
